Did you know that household batteries contain mercury? While a useful element, mercury is a toxic metal and all household batteries should be properly disposed of as hazardous waste or recycled. This includes all AAA, AA, C, D, button cell, 9 Volt, rechargeable and single use batteries.
Household batteries may be recycled in our curbside recycling program. Batteries should be placed in a zippered plastic bag and placed on top of your mixed paper or plastic, glass, and metal cart. No automotive batteries will be accepted.
Several local merchants have also volunteered to become household battery collection centers. These include:
Booksmart, 80 E. Second St., 778-6467
The Buzz Stop, 17400-1B Monterey Rd., 782-1029
Radio Shack, 870 Tennant Station, 778-2414
We applaud these local merchants for stepping forward to serve the community by making battery recycling convenient. For more information on local efforts to reduce the release of mercury in the environment, visit www.hhw.org.
