During the 2007 calendar year, the City Council spent a considerable amount of time studying the current state of public safety service levels in Morgan Hill. This included both Fire and Emergency Medical (EMS) service levels as well as Police service levels. The Public Safety & Community Services Committee of the City Council issued a report recommending the City explore potential annexation into the Santa Clara County Fire Protection District (SCCFD). The City currently contracts with County Fire to provide fire and EMS services in Morgan Hill. The Council authorized staff to study the issue of annexation further and staff will be presenting the financial feasibility of potential annexation to SCCFD at the April 23, 2008 City Council Meeting. The Public Safety & Community Services Committee of the City Council produced a report recommending the enhancement of Police Services with the addition of nine sworn police officers and two and a half non-sworn staff. The City does not currently have the revenues to sustain this desired new enhancement to the Police Department service levels and is exploring potential options to pay for these services.
In an effort to better understand the Community's interest in expanding police and/or fire and EMS service levels, the City commissioned a community opinion survey in April 2008. The results were presented at the April 23, 2008 City Council Meeting .
