The City is nearing completion of the repairs to the water main break that caused the outage. We anticipate water returning to residents in the next few hours. As a precautionary measure, the City has issued a boil water notice to affected residents via hard copy to the front door of each affected resident’s home. The boil water notice can be viewed here.

Common Questions

The City is sharing this list of commonly asked questions to support residents in understanding the boil water notice.

When is the boil water notice anticipated to be lifted?

The City must take water samples over two days to ensure there are no issues with the water. After the samples are taken, they must be processed at a lab and provided to the State of California. The City must then wait for approval from the State. Once approval is received, the boil water notice will be lifted. The City estimates the lifting of the notice within 3-4 days.

How will affected residents be notified the boil water notice is lifted?

The City will provide hard copy notification to all affected residents and post an update on the City website.

Why did the City issue a boil water notice?

When a water main break causes system pressure to be reduced or stopped, there could be a risk of contaminants backflowing into the water system. Although waterborne diseases are extremely rare, they can be serious. As a precaution, the City requests that customers boil their water or use bottled water until water sample lab test results become available.

What do I need to do to ensure my water is safe to drink and use?

You should boil tap water vigorously for at least one minute before using it for drinking or cooking (the minute starts when the water begins to bubble). Boiling removes harmful bacteria in the water that may cause illness. This includes water used for brushing teeth, making ice, washing raw foods, preparation of drinks and water for pets. Wait for the water to cool before using it, or store it in the refrigerator in a clean container. You should throw away ice made when the advisory or notice was issued, as freezing does not kill bacteria.

Is the water safe for washing dishes and laundry?

The water is safe for washing dishes, but you should use hot, soapy water (you may add one tablespoon of bleach per gallon as a precaution) and rinse dishes in boiled water. Household dishwashers are generally safe if the water reaches a final rinse temperature of at least 150 degrees Fahrenheit (65.55°Celsius) or if the dishwater has a sanitizing cycle. There are no restrictions on doing laundry.

Is the water safe for brushing teeth, washing hands, or bathing?

During a boil water notice, you can use tap water and soap to wash your hands. Be sure to scrub your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and rinse well under running water. While you can use tap water for bathing and showering, be careful not to swallow any water. Use caution when bathing babies and young children. Consider giving them a sponge bath to reduce the chance of them swallowing water. Brush teeth with previously boiled or bottled water. Do not use untreated tap water.

If I have questions, who can I contact?

For questions, you can contact the City’s Water Division at 408-776-7333.
